Psychological Therapies

Background Shape

Rossendale Hospice provides a range of services to help patients and their carers or families cope with their emotions, fears and concerns.

Psychological Therapies

Also known as talking therapies, psychological therapies are just like physiotherapy but instead of someone teaching what exercises can help your knee move better, these therapies are designed to help people understand and make changes to their thinking, behaviour and relationships in order to relieve distress and to improve functioning.

What are Psychological Therapies?
Our highly qualified and experienced psychotherapists offer psychological interventions including:
  • Counselling/psychotherapy
  • Family & Carer Support
  • Pre and post bereavement Counselling
Counselling provides private, confidential space to gain emotional support and practical guidance at a challenging time. A counsellor is an impartial professional who will listen non-judgementally and help:
  • clarify and prioritise concerns
  • deal with fears about the future
  • manage anxiety and depression
  • help you adjust to changes brought about by health issues

Who can use our service?
Counselling/psychotherapy is available for patients who attend the hospice Wellbeing Service, for their families and carers, and also for people in the community who have cancer or other life-limiting illness who are not accessing other hospice services.

Sessions are free of charge and last approximately 50 minutes, they are usually held weekly but may be scheduled to accommodate other medical appointments etc. Appointment times and goals for therapy will be discussed and agreed at the first session.

How do I know what's right for me?
Face to face or Telephone counselling?

Telephone counselling was introduced during the pandemic and has proved to be a very effective way of delivering therapy. Face to face sessions have recommenced at the hospice but telephone counselling can be a better option for people who find it difficult to attend in person.
